Tongue Tie and Orofacial Myology: Understanding and Treatment

At South Jersey Orofacial Myology, we specialize in helping individuals overcome challenges related to tongue tie and orofacial myofunctional disorders. Our team of experienced professionals is dedicated to providing comprehensive assessments, personalized treatment plans, and compassionate care to improve overall oral function and well-being.

What is Tongue Tie?

Tongue tie, or ankyloglossia, is a condition present at birth that restricts the tongue’s range of motion due to a tight or thick band of tissue (lingual frenulum) underneath the tongue. This limitation can affect various functions, including speech, feeding, swallowing, and oral hygiene. Some tongue ties are very noticeable and others are not so apparent.

Symptoms of Tongue Tie:

  • Speech difficulties, such as difficulty pronouncing certain sounds
  • Oral hygiene challenges, including difficulty cleaning the tongue or teeth
  • Limited tongue movement, such as difficulty sticking out the tongue or moving it side to side
  • Oral habits, such as mouth breathing or thumb sucking

Understanding Orofacial Myology:

Orofacial myology focuses on the assessment and treatment of oral and facial muscles’ function and structure. Terri Brown, our orofacial myofunctional therapist, is trained to evaluate and address issues related to improper oral habits, muscle dysfunction, and overall oral posture.

Our Approach:

At South Jersey Orofacial Myology, we take a holistic approach to treatment, addressing the root causes of oral and facial muscle dysfunction. Our comprehensive services include:

  1. Assessment: Thorough evaluation of oral function, including muscle strength, range of motion, and swallowing patterns.
  2. Treatment Planning: Personalized treatment plans tailored to each individual’s needs, goals, and challenges.
  3. Therapy: Hands-on therapy or Zoom sessions focus on retraining oral and facial muscles, correcting improper habits, and improving overall function.

We work with our clients to get them ready for a tongue tie release, if warranted. Then,  we provide after care to help strengthen the tongue, swallow correctly, achieve proper tongue posture (on the roof of the mouth) and, achieve nasal breathing.

  1. Collaboration: We work closely with other healthcare professionals, including dentists, orthodontists and, speech therapists to ensure comprehensive care and optimal outcomes.
